Catherine Webber is a bright, curious 5th grader. She is a gifted student, but was having noticeable difficulties in math. Her grades were negatively affected, and her parents wanted to prevent her from falling farther behind. So midway through her first semester, they began to consider working with an experienced tutor who could help her improve.

Plan of Action:

Catherine began tutoring, with the primary goals of enriching her education and improving her grades in math. From the first lesson, her tutor recognized that Catherine had many foundational concepts figured out. But she was prone to forgetting specific pieces of information. This led to her making more mistakes, and her tutor knew that filling those gaps in her knowledge would be vital to improving her grades.

Results:

During several months of lessons, Catherine’s tutor observed that she was quick to pick up on concepts when they were explained to her in a one-on-one setting. The tutor was able to clearly re-explain the concepts that Catherine had forgotten, and as their lessons went on, the need to backtrack became less and less of an issue. In her current lessons, Catherine has caught up to the point where her tutor primarily helps her with the new topics her class learned that week, without having to go back over old material nearly as often.

Outlook:

Catherine’s grades have steadily improved over the last few months. She is fully understanding her class material, and building on it as she goes. And she plans to continue tutoring for at least the rest of 5th grade, so that she can continue to improve. We are eager to see her continued progress, as well as the overall change in her grades by the end of this school year.
