Case Study #11 - Getting ready for Kindergarten
Olivia Patterson is a sweet, attentive four year old in transitional kindergarten. She is currently facing the prospect of starting kindergarten completely online. Her parents wanted to make sure that she was set up for success, and had a good learning foundation before starting at her elementary school. They especially wanted her to have a good grasp on reading beforehand.
Plan of Action:
When her tutoring started, Olivia’s family made a goal for Olivia to be able to read a book back to them by the end of the month. Even from the first lesson, Olivia was already excited to learn and quick to comprehend. But like many young students learning online, she had trouble keeping her attention consistently on the lesson. She was prone to squirming and would sometimes get distracted by things offscreen. This is totally to be expected with a student so young!
Results:
Her tutor quickly learned the best ways to recapture Olivia’s attention, such as by showing her a stuffed animal. And when she showed a lack of interest in a specific story they were reading, her tutor let her pick a new one that appealed to her more. Olivia was excited that she was able to shape her lessons in ways that suited her best. And after only three weeks, Olivia was able to read a book back to her family!
Outlook:
Going forward, her tutor will continue to help Olivia direct her attention during their lessons. They will also continue to nurture Olivia’s natural curiosity and comprehension, and take her desires into account. Online learning has its challenges; but with help, Olivia will overcome them and be fully prepared for kindergarten!
