Case Study #5 - *COVID Edition* Private Tutor for a 1st Grader

Annie Martinez is a sweet, eager 1st grader. She has a great joy for learning, but struggles with online classes. The isolation of this way of learning has been difficult for her, since she prefers to learn with other people around her. With online classes being their only option,

Annie's parents wanted to find her a tutor that could provide that one-on-one closeness and support, even from a virtual distance.

When her tutor started with Annie, she was especially struggling with English. When speaking, she would often skip over sounds. She lacked confidence in her reading, and preferred to have someone do the work with her, rather than attempt it on her own. But her tutor observed Annie’s positive attitude right off the bat. She was clearly ready and excited to learn. All she was lacking was some confidence and a few key skills.

Results:

As lessons went on, Annie’s enthusiasm for learning shone more and more. Her tutor offered the support and guidance that Annie needed. Over the course of their lessons, Annie has learned many sight words, improved her reading comprehension, and become proficient in letter sounds. Annie and her tutor have branched out into math and other core subjects as well. And over time, Annie has become less dependent on having someone always work through problems with her.

Outlook:

The main goal in Annie’s lessons has been to build her up, and improve her confidence. And after only a few months, this has been greatly successful! Annie is as eager to learn as ever, and has become sure enough of herself to work problems through, without being guided through each step every time. With her enthusiasm and positive outlook on learning, we are sure that Annie will keep growing in knowledge and confidence as her lessons continue!
