Case Study #1 - How tutoring helped 4th grader Ryan Andrews

By
1 Minute Read

With exclusively online classes due COVID19 school closures, many students have been struggling and falling behind. Fourth grader Ryan Andrews was one of these students, and his family was concerned that he would not be able to catch up. Working full time, they were not able to guide him through his work in the way that he needed.

Summary:

When we started tutoring, Ryan was struggling to maintain motivation over the summer. He had not been comfortable in the online learning environment of the semester prior; the new setup did not mesh well with his learning style. He needed one-on-one guidance, and for someone to take the time to assess his current knowledge, and then work to expand it. There are all kinds of different learners out there and we had to see what worked best for Ryan. The is where our team of amazing tutors come in.

Plan of Action:

His tutor started by engaging Ryan on a personal level, getting to know him and letting him become familiar with her before teaching began. She also had him take assessments to assess his strengths, and where he needed help. This showed her that reading and writing would need to be a big focus of their lessons. She then began using learning tools designed to engage him, such as interactive projects that they worked on over multiple lessons. This allowed him to become creatively connected to his work, and made learning more fun for him.

Results:

Over the course of their lessons, Ryan became more invested, taking extra care with his work. He was more thorough in his writing, taking the time to correct his mistakes. He thought things through more deeply, and his comprehension and ability to make predictions in texts greatly improved. After a few weeks, his tutor gave him another assessment, and was thrilled to see his excellent progress in the areas he had been most struggling with. We are looking forward to continued progress on his school report cards and academic growth.
