Amy Porter is a dedicated student, who has always worked hard to excel in school. She is now in 11th grade, but she started tutoring before 9th grade. She wanted help reviewing certain topics from middle school math, and preparing for her upcoming Geometry class. So she initiated tutoring during the summer before freshman year.
Plan of Action:
At the start of her lessons, Amy’s tutor primarily helped her review some math concepts from middle school that she had forgotten. Once those were solid, they moved on to preparing for Geometry. Once Amy started the class in the fall, she was well ahead of the class. This allowed her to take the time to work on harder material that she would see later in Geometry, as well as future classes. She was able to stay consistently ahead throughout her Freshman and Sophomore years with the help of her tutor. This allowed her to take extra time for the less straightforward topics, and she was able to fully understand the material before moving on to new concepts.
Results:
Amy continued tutoring consistently throughout 9th and 10th grade, and eventually into 11th grade. As a result of her hard work in her first two years of high school, she was approved for the Honors Algebra II class in 11th grade. As her class has started moving through material more quickly, her tutor has continued to help her keep up. As in previous classes, her tutor always makes sure to show the logic behind the material, rather than relying solely on memorization. And those skills that Amy developed by staying ahead in previous classes have done a great deal to help her keep up in her current class!
Outlook:
With the end of 11th grade in sight, Amy and her tutor have begun placing focus on SAT math preparation. As they’ve continued working, her tutor has conveyed various pieces of advice to help Amy get in the right mindset to take the test for the first time next year. In combination with the work she’s already doing for class, this extra guidance will go a long way to ensuring that Amy is as prepared as possible when she does take the test. And it will also help her think about her current class with even more attention to detail!
